Keeping Android Organized

A personalized, organized Android setup to boost efficiency and usability.

“A good system shortens the road to the goal” – Orison Swett Marden

We organize our lives, our homes, and our offices but often forget that, in this day and age, our electronic devices should also be part of the equation. I’m a big fan of the Android ecosystem because it gives me the tools to customize and streamline the experience of any future device I purchase, tailored to my usability and organization standards.

I’m not here to debate the pros and cons of different platforms. Instead, I want to share my current phone setup and the applications I use, in case you find something helpful for your own workflow.

Over the years as an Android user, I always start by testing the stock launcher to see if it meets my needs. This is usually the smoothest and most hassle-free way to keep things organized. However, if the stock launcher falls short, I switch to Nova Launcher, which lets me customize everything—from the home screen and app drawer to icons and gestures.

My home screen consists of a single main page (Figure 1), with the center widget displaying the current time, weather, and an agenda view of upcoming events. Swiping up reveals my App Drawer, which is organized by categories (Figure 2).

On the taskbar, I pin my most frequently used apps: the phone dialer, browser, password manager, two-factor authenticator, and camera. If the launcher allows it, I apply a custom icon pack such as Darkful to give my apps a more unified look. Currently, I’m using the "Black Onix Icon Pack" from Samsung’s Galaxy Themes Store to achieve the current aesthetic.

When it comes to the App Drawer, I aim to keep everything organized into categories except for a few frequently used apps that I chose not to pin to the dock. I also ensure the grid layout fits all folders and apps on a single screen, so I don’t have to swipe to access anything.

I generally avoid using apps that display ads and prefer to support developers by purchasing ad-free versions whenever possible.

The table below lists the applications currently installed on my devices, grouped by category. If your phone is linked to your Google Account and you use Google Play, you can use the direct links to install the apps on your device. Note that a few apps, such as Epic Games Store, F-Droid, and Termux, require manual installation via APK files outside of the Play Store.

I’d love to hear how you keep your own device organized and what apps you rely on.
